20 questions with the irrepressible Don Diablo...
What have the past 12 months been like for you?
Incredible, bizarre and exhausting! I definitely did a record amount of shows, tracks and remixes the past 12 months!Tell us about an album you’re in love with right now…
I definitely love the new Passion Pit album and digging some of the tunes on the Prince album as well!
Tell us about an album you’ve been in love with since forever…
I grew up on all of the Queen albums when I was a kid, so you could just pick any of them!
Tell us about an artist that doesn’t get enough credit…
As a hip hop fan I definitely think the ''Blue Collar'' album by Rhymefest is heavily underrated! Great beats, great lyrics and well, just lots of fun!
Tell us about a song you wish you’d written…
''Last Christmas'' by Wham, so I could just do whatever I want all year, knowing that by December the royalties will come rolling in again and again and again!
What was the first record you ever bought?
Ray Parker Jr. - Ghostbusters.
Who are the people/artists/bands that have had the biggest impact on your music?
Prince, Captain Beefheart, Rage against the machine, David Gray, Joey Beltram, Quincy Jones, Queen, Moby, Troy Spencer, Beastie Boys, Bjork, Jamie Lidell, Basement Jaxx, Luka Bloom, Jacques Lu Cont, Aphew Twin, Jean Michel Jarre, Tom Waits, Mark Ronson, Daft Punk, The Rolling Stones, Jamiroquai and the list goes on!
Whose music leaves you cold?
I am not a big fan of minimal house in general, I just don't get it and it mostly bores me to death.
How do you feel about the illegal downloading of music?
I am used to it now (sssssst, don't tell my record company!) and see a lot of advantages to it as well. People all across the globe can get my music, even when a single or an album isn't even released officially in that specific territory, which allows you to tour there anyway.
Have you/do you download music illegally?
Hell yeah, of course!
What does the future look like for the music industry?
People will keep on listening to music, I have no fear of that. I guess in the end all record companies will turn into management companies that do a lot more than just pressing and promoting records. On the other hand a lot more bands will just release their music on the internet themselves or eventually even give it away for free.
What’s your greatest fear?
I always have this dream that I am playing somewhere on a big festival and forgot to put my pants on.
Do you have any vices?
I am a big dessert freak, I could eat desserts all day, actually I do eat desserts all day!
Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?
Dave Chapelle, Spike Jonze, Natalie Portman, Juliette Lewis, Baz Luhrman, The Dalai Lama, Weird Al Jankovic, Gordon Ramsey, Quentin Tarantino and Snoop Dogg.
Which living person do you most despise, and why?
Although I don't really easily despise people, I have someone who used to be my best friend for years, he even used to spent Christmas with my family. One day I borrowed him a sack of money without even thinking about it. To make a long story short, I have never heard again from him since. That kind of changed my perspective on friendship and made me a lot more reserved when it comes to making new friends.
What would be your fancy dress costume of choice?
Probably the Batman suit, any man looks good in that suit!
What song would you like played at your funeral?
Johnny Cash - Hurt.
Who would play you in the film of your life?
Depends on when I die, but I guess Edward Norton would definitely not put me to shame!
Musically speaking, what would you like to achieve in the year ahead?
This year my focus will be on the UK and US markets and I hope to make somewhat of an impact in these territories!
And finally, tell us a secret…
I was a serial killer in a previous life.
