Lexy from Harlem Shakes brings his dry wit to The Mix Tape's Set List, talking Don Cheadle to Shakespeare and 90s rap to post-apocalyptic disco...What have the past 12 months been like for you?
Sort of like a year. Exciting. Ridiculous amounts of action. Spells of campaigning, writing in LA, and touring. I'm a little tired, maybe.
Tell us about an album you’re in love with right now…
Cornershop's record When I Was Born for the 7th Time. It is a deep, deep record, but catchy and joyous on the surface. And it prefigured this current "world" music mixed with pop trend.
Tell us about an album you’ve been in love with since forever…
Sail Away by Randy Newman. It is alternately, hilarious, moving, mordant, trenchant--it is just plain dope. And kids love it.
Tell us about an artist that doesn’t get enough credit…
That 90's joy-pop band Wheat. They sort of sound like Daniel Johnston but with beatz.
Tell us about a song you wish you’d written…
"Hey Ya." I still love that song. I'd be typing this list on a table made of emerald-studded human bones if I'd written that tune.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Eric B and Rakim, Don't Sweat the Technique.
Who are the people/artists/bands that have had the biggest impact on your music?
My dad for siring me. My first serious girlfriend.
Whose music leaves you cold?
Shaq's first album. Where is Shaq's irrepressible spirit and sense of humor on that record?
How do you feel about the illegal downloading of music?
It makes me feel less wealthy.
Have you/do you download music illegally?
Sort of.
What does the future look like for the music industry?
Global warming. Harlem Shakes making power moves.
What’s your greatest fear?
The devil Moloch inhabiting a human body with a cat's head crudely sewed onto it.
Do you have any vices?
Nope.
Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?
Shakespeare. Philip Roth. Bette Davis. Emanuelle. Willy Brandt. Jonah Hill.
Which living person do you most despise, and why?
To be honest, I'm not too crazy about any of the living these days, with their flush skin and their warm flesh. Gross.
What would be your fancy dress costume of choice?
Post-apocalyptic disco archduke.
What song would you like played at your funeral?
Jesus Christ! You're steering me into dark waters, captain. "The Crossroads" by Bone Thugs 'N' Harmony.
Who would play you in the film of your life?
Don Cheadle.
Musically speaking, what would you like to achieve in the year ahead?
Make a beautiful album, reclaim the 2nd best guitarist crown in my band, and encroach on that number one spot.
And finally, tell us a secret…
Everything is possible.
